Moving the Transporter
Only authorized personel are allowed to move the transporter. The current list of authorized transporter movers is:
Clear the Area
The first step in moving the transporter is to make sure that there are no obstuctions in the area to interfere with it's movement (or, more likely, to be squashed like a bug by it). The things to check are:
- The blue area on the floor behind the rear rail should be clear. This is the area the GorTube moves through.
- Check to make sure that the tops of the rails are clean. Get a broom and sweep them off.
- Check to make sure that the guide rail and rack inside the front rail are clear.
- Make sure that there is nothing between the rails.
- Make sure there is nothing inside the rear rail. CAUTION : The yellow rails inside the rear transporter rail are feed rails that carry the power to the transporter. These have 110V on them and can kill you. DO NOT INSERT ANYTHING IN THE FEED RAILS!
- Make sure that there is nothing under that transporter. This means you need to get down on the floor and look from both sides.
- Make sure there is nothing on top of the transporter that can interfere with it's movement. This is best done by climbing up and checking, but it can be done from the top of the MPS.
- Clear the interlock system. Hit one of the kill buttons to verify that things are working correctly. Release the button and reset the interlock.
- Check the ball screws and the rack and pinion to make sure the grease is clean. Consult Maintenance for LGD Transporter or Eric Scott for details on the kind of grease needed.
- If you are moving the transporter while the area is open :
- Station people so that they can observe all possible access to the transporter and warn others to stay clear. One person should be located at the service disconnect boxes on the side of the transporter to kill power in the event of an interlock failure.
- Verify that the darkroom is empty. Ideally, place your lock on it if HP does not have one installed.
- Announce over the MPS page : Attention, the LGD transporter is being moved. Stay clear.
Actually Moving It
After the area has been cleared, you are ready to move the transporter.
- Verify that the brake controller module is in the `on' position.
- Remove your lock from the `LGD Transporter Motion Control' disconnect box and power up the transporter.
- Move the transporter using /home/mpsdaq/e852/daq/bin/turboPig. This program works just like evbv.
- When you are done moving, power down the transporter and replace your lock on the disconnect box.
If you experience difficulties moving the transporter, call an expert.
When to Move the Transporter
In general, the transpoerter can be left in it's normal runnning position. The only time you really need to move it is if the MPS will be off for more than one shift and high intensity beam will be in the area. In this case, you need to move it to the `MPS off' position to protect the glass from radiation damage.
After the Transporter Has Been Idle
If the transporter has been idle for more than 60 days, consult an expert before attempting motion.
